In front of a raucous, sellout crowd at Športová hala on Saturday night, BC Prievidza delivered a statement performance in TIPOS SBL, dismantling local rivals MBK Handlová 99–68 in a derby that quickly turned into a showcase of dominance.
From the opening tip, Prievidza set the tone with relentless defensive pressure (two Joe Toussaint steals in the first three minutes) and crisp execution in transition, igniting the packed arena. What was billed as a fierce regional showdown instead became a one-sided affair, as the hosts imposed their tempo and never looked back. Their defensive intensity disrupted Handlová’s offensive rhythm, forcing turnovers and contested looks. After the first quarter already, Gareth Murray’s troops had doubled up their neighbours 24-12.
Unselfish Teamplay
By halftime, the margin had ballooned to 18 points and the atmosphere inside Športová hala shifted from tense rivalry to celebratory anticipation. The second half brought more of the same. Prievidza’s balanced attack (6 players scoring in double figures) and unselfish play (26 total assists) kept the pressure firmly on Handlová. Whether from beyond the arc, in the paint, or at the free-throw line, the hosts found production across the roster.

Davontrey Thomas connected on four of six threes and finished with a game-high 18 points in 18 minutes. Joe Toussaint added 15 points and six dimes to his defensive contributions. Sage Tolbert and Naje Smith combined for 25 points, 16 caroms and six highflying dunks. James Bishop, whose contract extension for the rest of the season was announced shortly after, delivered 12 points and four assists. Special mention goes to Slovak center Maros Zeliznak, who played a team-high 27 minutes and provided consistent hedge defense and hustle aside from a 7 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Major Challenges Ahead
Derby celebrations quickly shifted back to business mode with major challenges on the horizon both domestically and internationally. This evening BC will be aiming for an encore to the club’s historic home win over Sporting CP in their final FIBA Europe Cup Top 16 contest at the Portuguese giants. The next edition of the TIPOS SBL “clash of titans” between Prievidza and league leaders Levice awaits on Valentine’s Day. On Monday, the Miners are travelling to a struggling but still extremely dangerous BC Slovan at the capital. And only a couple of days later they will face a heavily reinforced Nitra Blue Wings in the Slovak Cup semifinal. The derby was only the beginning…
